Injury Free Nova Scotia (IFNS) and the Association of Black Social Workers (ABSW) are proud to announce the release of our Grab Bar Giveaway Project Report. The Grab Bar Giveaway Project aimed to reduce fall-related injuries by installing grab bars in homes across the province. Grab bars are safety and accessibility devices, often mounted in bathrooms, designed to reduce the risk of injury from falls by helping individuals maintain balance and reduce fatigue when standing or moving around a space.
This initiative highlighted the systemic challenges faced by elderly African Nova Scotian populations, who often lack adequate care and assistance or encounter barriers such as difficulty navigating programs designed to support them. By eliminating pre-assessments and complicated applications, ABSW ensured the project was low-barrier and easy to access. Beyond improving home safety and reducing the risk of injury from falls, the project also raised awareness about injury prevention and underscored the importance of community-driven efforts to support seniors and individuals with mobility challenges.
We invite you to explore the report and learn more about the impacts, stories, and successes made possible through this initiative.
